Maestia: Another Free-to-Play Game Worthy of Your Attention

Intro

This review is about Maestia: Rise of Keledus online game.  Maestia (pronounced May-stee-ah) is brought to you by Andromeda Games and is a MMORPG that is free-to-play.

How to Begin

The first thing you need to do is register at the game’s website. Point your browser to http://maestia.com and register for an account. The recommended system requirements are as follows:

  • 2.0 Ghz processor
  • 4 GB RAM
  • 14 GB free disk space

You need a valid email address to use during registration. Once you have registered, you will need to log in to your email account and activate your account by clicking on the link sent to you by Maestia. This is not a virus; it is an authentication procedure. After you click on the activation link, you will be returned to the page where you can download the game client Click on the “download now” icon.

You should receive a pop-up window asking you to save the game client:

Click on “Save File” to begin your game download. Another pop-up window will give a security warning and ask if you want to run the file. It is safe to go ahead and “run” the file.

The actual download will now proceed. The entire download process will take approximately one hour, so you may want to go grab a bite to eat while you wait. Actually, the entire download and installation process seems to take forever, but it is worth it. Anyway, when the download is finished, the game installation will launch. The installation is in German, so you might be a bit confused at this point. Don’t worry; you can choose a different language for the game. For right now, however, you will have to deal with the German. Click on the “Installieren” button (“Abbrechen” is to cancel).

The file will be unpacked before the installation officially begins. After the files are unpacked, you will get the following message:

Go ahead and click on the install button. In all, the installation takes about 10 minutes to complete. No, you are not finished yet. The game client will spend another 20 to 30 minutes downloading a game patch.

I received two script errors during the patch download, but it did not affect anything. I just closed out the script error boxes and continued with the download. As you can see in the above graphic, you can choose to play in full screen mode and you can manually choose the resolution and graphic quality. The language of the download box can be changed. When the patch is finished, a small update will be downloaded. FINALLY, you will be prompted to play the game. Click on the “play” button and, after waiting through another 5 minutes for the game to optimize, you will be able to begin the game.

Gameplay

Maestia will ask you to log in and you can choose a language from German, English, French, Turkish, Italian, and Spanish. After choosing a server to play on, you can create one of four characters.  There are two factions to choose from: Superion Guardians and Temple Knights.

Each faction has four classes—Cleric, Mage, Ranger, and Warrior. Both factions and classes have special skills. You may think that only certain characters can be male or female, but don’t worry—you can change the sex of the character during the next stage. At this point, choose your faction and then your class. I chose a Temple Knight Ranger.

At the next screen, you can change your character to male or female, choose the color of skin, eye tattoos, hair style and color, height, body size, and choose a character name.

When the game begins, a short cinematic movie will play. You will then be given the option to watch a small tutorial; I suggest that you watch it.

The objectives of the game are to complete quests, fight enemies, and increase your skills and level. As you level up your character, you gain points that you can use to increase certain skills. Different armor and weapons can be won, looted from drops, or purchased. As with other games in this category, you can join a guild and participate in raids.

Technical: Settings, Options, and Game Interface

The interface in nice and clean; it is typical of these types of games.

Starting at the bottom left hand portion of the screen, you will see the following items:

  • Five slots for various sized inventory bags
  • Two slots for potions. One type of potion is a healing potion and the other can be used to replenish focus, energy, etc. A nice feature of the potion slots is that they can be toggled on and off; your character will automatically drink a potion when that stat gets to a certain level. For example, you can set it so that when your health gets to 20% of its total, you will drink a health replenish potion. The potion will not restore your health fully, so you still need to be careful.
  • Action bar with 10 slots for specials. You can flip through 3 sets of the action bar and you can also add more slots above the bar.
  • Icons for “Shop” and “Spin.” This is paid content.
  • Mini-map

Across the top of the screen, you will see a health status bar and your character’s level. A big arrow hovers above your character to show in which direction you should be heading.

Game options can be changed, which is necessary for me. In order to control your character’s movements, you use a combination of the mouse and keyboard. The keys assigned for movement are W, S, A, D and I found that uncomfortable. No worries; I changed the options so I could use the arrow keys.

Summary

Maestia is a very enjoyable game. There is paid content, but the free-to-play aspects are great. Even though the downloading and installation process was tedious, I am glad I took the time to try out this game. Maestia is a very fun game and I completely recommend it.
